Memory related disorders and forgetting

Memory plays a vital role in every aspect of our lives. The mind is what makes us who we are as a person and where we come from. I have seen movies over people who have gotten in horrific car accidents and have lost their memories. Who they are as a person has been lost forever, they might see pictures of their past or people who are related to them or even spouses and not remember who they are.

   

   Michelle Philpot’s Story:

            For example, Michelle Philpot’s was in a car accident resulting in memory loss, and she wakes up next to her husband that has had to convince her that they are married. She frequently looks at photo albums of their wedding day to subside her doubt. Michelle Philpot’s injuries echo the day to day memory just like they do in Adam Sandler's movie with Drew Barrymore in 50 First Dates. Mrs. Philpot’s states that she uses hundreds of Post-It notes and reminders on her mobile phone's calendar to keep her informed of appointments and everyday duties. However, some of the benefits are that there is no repeat on television and that every joke she hears is funny because it is the first time she has heard it.

What memory means to me:

Our memory is what keeps us remembering who we are, where we came from, and how we have overcome the obstacles that were put in front of us. Their story inspires many people. The daily patience, love, devotion, and care that is needed to be put in from this accident is remarkable. Memory is a beautiful thing, and when taken away it reminds us to appreciate the little things just a little bit more.
