Brain and Behavior

What really caught my attention when referring to the brain and its behavior is the process neuroplasticity. Our brain has a way of changing a learning in many different ways. According to Dr. Lara Boyd, a brain researcher at British Columbia University, in her TEDx video, it described to me the complexity and the matter of functions your brain really handles. For example, she described "All of our behaviors change our brain, that these changes are not limited by age, but in fact, they are taking place all the time." The changes that take place in your brain are not only chemical changes but, physical changes as well. Chemical signals in the brain are done by neurons, supported by short-term learning.

However, physical changes work within long-term memory. Neuroplasticity is complex in engaging your brain in regards to how you think, speak, feel, and overall function as an individual in society. This is important to me because thinking about the functional changes, chemical changes, and the physical changes that all support neuroplasticity is compounded into everyday changes happening in the brain, taking place all the time. This is a defining factor as to what makes you unique. What you think, how you react, what engages your emotions in certain situations, what drives you to do the unthinkable. These are all exampled questions as to your character, and who you are as a person.

  1. You gave some really great examples. This was very informative and you got straight to the point. We actually both showed interest in neuroplasticity. I must say I agree with you on how extraordinary the brain is and it's ability to change. Thanks for a good read!

  2. Hey, Carolynn! You have an awesome post about the brain. I agree with you on how interesting the brain is and how it is constantly changing with anything that we are doing. I like the questions that you have at the bottom of your post. They really make you think hard about the brain and its capabilities. Which is also weird to think that while we think about answering them our brain is changing while we think of it! How cool is that.

  3. Hey Carolynn! So I read your blog and it just so happens that we share the same interest in neuroplasticity! I actually watched the TED talk with Dr. Laura Boyd too and the way you explained this was just spot on. I do agree with you though about how the complexity of our brain is extraordinary and the fact that it is constantly changing is just crazy. I really enjoyed your post!!! love ya girl :)

  4. Hi Carolynn! Your focus on neuroplasticity in this post was really interesting, that isn't something that stuck out to me before reading this! It is really crazy that our brains are constantly going through so many changes. The Ted Talk video was really neat, too. It would have been even better if the post was a bit longer, but great job!

  5. Hey Carolynn, I really like how you explained this I wouldn't have ever thought this was very interesting but it got me thinking about how this could effect one's perception which is something that interest me a lot. I do wish it was a bit more in depth, but I think otherwise it was great and I wish to do some more research on this, Thanks for the great post!

  6. Carolynn this was a great read. I was blown away at the fact that our behaviors can affect the longevity of the chemicals and physical aspects of our brain. I have noticed changes within myself personally within this past semester and have thought about it.
